Long Biography

Martin began playing guitar at the age of nine studying classical guitar under Arthur Brown.  However, the lure of the electric rock guitar became too overwhelming for him and consequently Martin concentrated solely on bandwork for the next few years.  It wasn’t until the mid 1980s, after watching the renowned acoustic guitarist Gordon Giltrap, that Martin’s appreciation of acoustic music was rekindled.

In the 1990s Martin played with a number of successful bands and duos forming a considerable reputation as a versatile guitarist.  Players such as Andy Fairweather Low, Gordon Giltrap and Steve Knightley complimented his abilities.

With the turn on the new century, Martin has travelled full circle back to his original love, the classical guitar, rapidly advancing to diploma level under the instruction of Brian J Penny.

Martin takes great pleasure in telling the story of his first music teacher at secondary school who told him that he had no dexterity in his fingers.  When you hear him play you will realise just how mistaken this teacher was. He is a very popular musician who has been described as a guitarist who doesn’t just “play” the guitar but “caresses” it.
